Frequently Asked Questions for Varenicline (Champix)

How does it work?

Varenicline is a nicotine receptor agonist that interacts with receptors in the brain, partially stimulating them while simultaneously blocking nicotine from binding. This reduces the pleasurable effects of smoking, helping to curb cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms.

How to take Varenicline (Champix)?

  • Start treatment 1–2 weeks before your quit date.
  • Follow this dosage schedule:
    • Days 1–3: 0.5mg once daily (white tablet)
    • Days 4–7: 0.5mg twice daily (white tablet)
    • Day 8 onwards: 1mg twice daily (light blue tablet)
  • The initial course lasts 12 weeks, with an additional 12-week follow-up course recommended for those who successfully quit.
  • Take the tablets at the same time each day, with or without food. If a dose is missed, do not take an extra dose to compensate.
  • For patients who have successfully stopped smoking at the end of 12 weeks, an additional course of 12 weeks treatment with CHAMPIX at 1 mg twice daily may be considered for the maintenance of abstinence

Is Varenicline (Champix) the same as nicotine replacement therapy?

Unlike nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches or gum, Varenicline does not contain nicotine, making it a non-addictive option for quitting smoking. It works by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms rather than supplying nicotine to the body.

Side effects
