Fosfomycin

Fosfomycin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, killing the bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections and preventing further growth. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Enterococcus faecalis, which are the most common causes of cystitis and lower UTIs.

Fosfomycin is rapidly absorbed by the body and reaches high concentrations in the urine, where it targets the infection directly. Most patients experience a noticeable improvement in symptoms within 2 to 3 days of taking a single dose.

Fosfomycin is taken as a single-dose oral treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in adults.

• Dissolve the full contents of one 3g sachet in a glass of cold or room-temperature water.
• Stir well and drink immediately after mixing.
• For best results, take on an empty stomach, ideally before bedtime and after emptying your bladder.
• Do not take a second dose unless specifically directed by your prescriber.

Most people tolerate Fosfomycin well. Common side effects include headaches, nausea, dizziness, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. These are generally mild and resolve without treatment.

Seek medical attention promptly if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, or if you develop persistent or severe diarrhoea, as this can occasionally indicate a more serious gut infection.

Do not take Fosfomycin if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, are under 12 years of age, or have significant kidney impairment.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or currently taking medicines such as metoclopramide or hormonal contraceptives, as these can reduce the absorption and effectiveness of Fosfomycin.

Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness or unusual tiredness after taking this medicine.
