What Is the Wegovy Pill and How Does It Work?
The Wegovy pill is an oral, once-daily tablet containing semaglutide, the same clinically proven active ingredient found in Wegovy injections. A needle-free alternative for adults with obesity or weight-related health conditions, it works by mimicking a natural hormone that reduces appetite and helps you feel fuller for longer.
How Does the Wegovy Pill Work?
- Appetite Control Semaglutide acts on appetite receptors in the brain to help you feel satisfied with smaller portions and experience fewer cravings throughout the day.
- Blood Sugar Regulation The Wegovy pill stimulates insulin secretion in response to rising blood glucose levels, helping to prevent spikes in blood sugar that can trigger hunger and cravings.
- Slows Gastric Emptying By slowing the rate at which food moves from the stomach to the intestines, the pill helps you feel fuller for longer after meals, reducing the likelihood of overeating.
Unlike the Wegovy injection, which is absorbed directly into the bloodstream from under the skin, the oral tablet must pass through the digestive system. Because only a small amount reaches the bloodstream via this route, the pill uses SNAC technology and is taken at a higher concentration. This makes correct dosing and administration essential for it to work effectively.
Who Can Take the Wegovy Pill?
The Wegovy pill is one of the most clinically supported weight loss treatments available. Adults may be eligible if they have:
- A BMI of 30 or higher
- A BMI of 27 or higher with related conditions such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes
Note: You must consult a doctor and obtain a prescription. Speak with Farmeci experts for guidance.
Wegovy Pill Dosing Schedule
Treatment begins at a lower dose and gradually increases to minimise side effects.
Daily Dose Days 1–30 (Month 1): 1.5 mg once daily
Days 31–60 (Month 2): 4 mg once daily
Days 61–90 (Month 3): 9 mg once daily
Day 91 onwards (Maintenance): 25 mg once daily
Note: Always consult your doctor to determine the correct dosage based on your health goals. The full treatment effect is typically seen at the maintenance dose of 25mg.
How Effective Is the Wegovy Pill?
Clinical trial data demonstrates that the Wegovy pill produces meaningful, sustained weight loss when taken correctly alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
OASIS 1 Clinical Trial: In the OASIS 1 Phase 3 clinical trial, participants taking 50mg semaglutide lost an average of 15.1% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared to 2.4% in the placebo group.
OASIS 4 Clinical Trial: In the OASIS 4 trial, participants taking 25mg of oral semaglutide daily for 64 weeks lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight. Approximately one in three participants achieved 20% or more body weight loss.
Key findings from the OASIS 1 trial:
- Average weight loss of 15.1% vs 2.4% with placebo
- Highly dependent on correct and consistent daily administration
- Results improve with maintained lifestyle changes
How to Take the Wegovy Pill
- Take one Wegovy tablet first thing in the morning on a completely empty stomach, with no more than 120ml of plain water.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating any food, drinking any beverages, or taking any other oral medications.
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, cut, chew, or dissolve it.
What Not to Do
- Do not take more than one Wegovy pill per day.
- Do not take with any liquid other than water.
- Do not take alongside any other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 receptor agonists.
- Do not share your medication with others.
- Do not store tablets outside of their original closed bottle.
What If You Miss a Dose?
If you miss a day, skip the missed dose entirely. Do not double up the following day. Simply resume your regular schedule.
Wegovy Pill vs Wegovy Injection: What's the Difference?
Both the Wegovy pill and the Wegovy injection contain semaglutide and work by activating GLP-1 receptors to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness. However, there are important differences in how they are taken, how they are absorbed, and their average weight loss outcomes.
The Wegovy pill is taken as a once-daily oral tablet, while the injection is administered once weekly. The pill is available in four strengths (1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg), whereas the injection comes in a wider range including the recently approved 7.2mg dose.
in terms of weight loss, the pill produced an average of 15.1% body weight reduction at 68 weeks in the OASIS 1 trial, compared to 20.7% at 72 weeks in the STEP UP trial for the injection. The pill can be stored at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C, while Wegovy injectable pens must be kept refrigerated at 2°C–8°C. The pill is needle-free; the injection is not.
Which Is Right for You?
The Wegovy injection may be better suited to those who prefer the convenience of once-weekly dosing and benefit from more consistent, predictable absorption into the bloodstream. Clinical data suggests it produces slightly greater average weight loss than the oral tablet.
The Wegovy pill may be preferable for those who are averse to needles, find a daily tablet routine easier to maintain, or prefer not to manage refrigerated storage.
Suitability depends on your individual preference, medical history, and clinical assessment. Always speak with a pharmacist or prescriber before switching or starting any new treatment.

Alternatives to the Wegovy Pill
