Frequently Asked Questions for Wegovy
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It is licensed for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight adults with at least one weight-related health condition.
Semaglutide works by mimicking a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and food intake - helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing overall calorie intake.
Wegovy is administered as a once-weekly injection and is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, rather than as a standalone treatment.
Wegovy is licensed for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 kg/m² or above (obesity), or
- A BMI of 27 kg/m² or above (overweight), where at least one weight-related condition is also present (e.g. high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes)
A UK-registered clinician will confirm your eligibility before Wegovy is prescribed.

Limitations of Use
- Wegovy® contains semaglutide and should not be coadministered with other semaglutide-containing products or with any GLP-1 receptor agonist

- Wegovy® has not been studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis
What are the possible side effects of Wegovy®?
Wegovy® may cause serious side effects, including:
- inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis). Stop using Wegovy® and call your healthcare provider right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that will not go away, with or without vomiting. You may feel the pain from your abdomen to your back
- gallbladder problems. Wegovy® may cause gallbladder problems, including gallstones. Some gallstones may need surgery. Call your healthcare provider if you have symptoms, such as pain in your upper stomach (abdomen), fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or clay-colored stools
- increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially those who also take medicines for type 2 diabetes such as sulfonylureas or insulin. This can be both a serious and common side effect. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to recognize and treat low blood sugar and check your blood sugar before you start and while you take Wegovy®. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include dizziness or light-headedness, blurred vision, anxiety, irritability or mood changes, sweating, slurred speech, hunger, confusion or drowsiness, shakiness, weakness, headache, fast heartbeat, or feeling jittery

- serious allergic reactions. Stop using Wegovy® and get medical help right away, if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; severe rash or itching; fainting or feeling dizzy; or very rapid heartbeat
- change in vision in people with type 2 diabetes. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision during treatment with Wegovy®
- increased heart rate. Wegovy® can increase your heart rate while you are at rest. Tell your healthcare provider if you feel your heart racing or pounding in your chest and it lasts for several minutes
- depression or thoughts of suicide. You should pay attention to any mental changes, especially sudden changes in your mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any mental changes that are new, worse, or worry you
The most common side effects of Wegovy® may include: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdomen) pain, headache, tiredness (fatigue), upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, gas, stomach flu, heartburn, and runny nose or sore throat.

Impact of Weight Loss Injections on Contraception
Important notice for patients using weight loss medications and taking the pill or HRT
Many patients are now using weight loss medications such as Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) — either for diabetes management or privately for weight loss.
These medications work partly by slowing how your stomach empties, which can affect how well other medicines (like the contraceptive pill or HRT tablets) are absorbed by your body.
If you take the contraceptive pill:
This medicine may reduce how well the pill works. Semaglutide does not appear to reduce the effectiveness of the pill.
However, side effects such as vomiting or diarrhoea can still reduce how well the pill is absorbed.
Use extra protection (like condoms) if these occur and follow the missed pill rules as above.
If you’re taking Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT):
This applies if your HRT includes progesterone tablets such as:
- Progesterone (Utrogestan)
- Norethisterone
- Medroxyprogesterone acetate
There is some concern that weight loss medications like Semaglutide may reduce how well these tablets are absorbed. This could cause irregular bleeding and may affect the protection of your womb lining, potentially increasing the risk of endometrial cancer.
Please contact your prescriber or pharmacy team to discuss your HRT or contraception options while using weight loss medication.
Cardiovascular Benefits
Wegovy has been shown to provide benefits beyond weight loss:
- In the SELECT trial (2023), Wegovy reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death) by 20% in adults with overweight or obesity and established heart disease.
- It can also improve blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammatory markers, contributing to better overall heart health.
Average Weight Loss Results
Clinical studies show that:
- Participants using Wegovy 2.4 mg once weekly lost an average of 15-17% of their body weight over 68 weeks.
- Around one-third of users lost more than 20% of their starting weight when combined with a healthy diet and physical activity.
- Weight loss typically builds up gradually, with visible results after 8–12 weeks and maximum benefit over several months.
What is the new 7.2mg Wegovy dose?
The MHRA approved a maximum dose of 7.2mg per week of semaglutide (Wegovy) on 6 January 2026, for adult patients with obesity only (BMI ≥30kg/m²). It is given as 3 injections of 2.4mg on the same day, at least 5cm apart, with the needle changed between each injection. Patients must have been on 2.4mg for a minimum of 4 weeks before stepping up. This higher dose does not apply to patients using Wegovy for heart risk reduction or those with a BMI under 30. Always follow your prescriber's instructions. For more information, visit the MHRA's official announcement, or read our full guide to the 7.2mg dose.
Clinical Evidence (STEP UP Trial, 72 weeks):
- Average body weight reduction of 18.7% vs 3.9% with placebo
- 89% of patients lost 5% or more of body weight vs 38% with placebo
- 31% of patients lost 25% or more of body weight vs 0% with placebo
Multi-Pack
Wegovy (Semaglutide) Multi-Dose Treatment Packs – Important Information
Wegovy can cause side effects, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, reduced appetite, headache, and bloating.
Not all patients tolerate dose increases at the same rate. Some patients may need to remain on a lower dose for longer than planned, delay dose escalation, or discontinue treatment following clinical review.
If you are new to Wegovy or have not previously completed dose escalation successfully, please carefully consider whether purchasing a treatment pack containing multiple strengths (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg) is appropriate for you.
As prescription medicines cannot be reused or resold once supplied, all dispensed medicines are non-returnable and non-refundable except where required by law. If your treatment needs to be adjusted due to side effects or tolerability issues, unused medication cannot be returned for a refund.
