Frequently Asked Questions for Zolmitriptan 5mg Nasal Spray

What It Is

Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray is a prescription medication belonging to the "triptan" class of serotonin agonists. It is used to treat the acute phase of a migraine attack in adults. Unlike traditional tablets, this single-use spray is absorbed through the nasal mucosa, providing a practical solution for patients who struggle to swallow medication during a migraine.

How It Works

Migraine symptoms are often caused by the temporary widening and inflammation of blood vessels in the brain. Zolmitriptan works by stimulating serotonin receptors, which causes these blood vessels to narrow (constrict) back to their normal size. This targeted action not only relieves the headache pain but also helps alleviate secondary symptoms like light sensitivity and nausea.

How to Use

Preparation: Gently blow your nose before use. Remove the protective nozzle cover.

Administration: Close one nostril with your finger and insert the nozzle into the other nostril. Tilt your head back slightly and close your mouth.

Dose: Press the plunger firmly while breathing in gently through your nose. Keep your head tilted back for 5 to 10 seconds.

Timing: Use one spray (5mg) as soon as the migraine headache begins.

Repeat Dose: If symptoms persist or return, a second dose can be taken after two hours. Do not exceed two doses (10mg) in a 24-hour period.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • A temporary change in taste (often a bitter taste in the mouth)
  • Nasal irritation or a "runny" nose
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Tingling or a warm sensation
  • A dry mouth

If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips, or tongue), stop using the spray and seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Cardiovascular Health: Not suitable for individuals with high blood pressure, a history of heart disease, angina, strokes, or "mini-strokes" (TIA).
  • Age Restrictions: Recommended for adults aged 18 to 65.
  • Interactions: Do not use at the same time as other triptans or ergotamine-type migraine medications. Consult your GP if you are taking antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs).
